The short answer

The terms describe different things. Islam is the name of the religion, while Muslim describes a person who follows Islam. Neither word names an ethnicity, language, or nationality. A mosque is a place of Muslim worship, and the Qur’an is Islam’s central scripture.

A little more context

This distinction helps when reading a headline or meeting someone. “Muslim” does not tell you everything about a person’s culture, political views, or level of religious practice. Begin with the shared foundations, then allow room for individual lives and differences of interpretation.
